  • Nearly 1 in 9 children has asthma; many of who are not diagnosed

  • Asthma rates have been on the rise for decades

  • Allergic conditions are the largest health issue affecting children in the U.S.

Holiday Teacher Appreciation

During this festive season, we want to do something to show our teachers how much we appreciate them.  The PTA is organizing breakfast and dessert days during the last week before the holiday and we ask for your help bringing breakfast or dessert items as a thank you to all Harvard staff for their efforts this year! Sign up below to help us!

Breakfast is scheduled for Tuesday, December 13. Please bring items to the teacher's lounge by 7:15 am. On Thursday, December 15 we will have a dessert buffet. Please bring dessert items to the teacher's lounge by 10:00 am.  Please drop off items in the teacher's lounge by 10 am though they can certainly be dropped off earlier!

Please help with one or both if you can and sign-up here!

Many thanks to each of you!

Time Travelers Needed: Donate to Totally Harvard's Spring Fundraiser!

This Year's Annual Fundraiser is February 11

We are raising funds to improve our library and enhance our current art program.

We are looking for some time travelers to donate to our auction. Here are three ways YOU can help:

1. Donations for our silent and live auction. If you have access to a vacation home, or any item or service you would like to donate, please visit our website at or contact Annie Stein at

2. Get together with some friends and throw a party! The hosts pay for the event, and spots for the party are auctioned off to raise money for the school. The party can be for children or adults only. This is a great way to get to know other Harvard families. Examples include a backyard movie night, Cocktails and Cupcakes, or an in-home dinner party. Please visit our website or contact Barrett Kilian at for more information or ideas.

 3. A monetary donation is always appreciated! We have sponsorship and underwriting opportunities available or will gladly accept any outright donations. Please visit our website or contact Cara Starnes at

We could not support our wonderful school without your help! All donations are greatly appreciated. Please remember that Harvard Elementary (PTA) is a non-profit 501(C)(3) educational and charitable organization and your contribution is fully deductible to the extent allowable by law.

Help out at Seasons of Sharing!

Parents, we have a great itinerary of activities in store for our children at this year's Seasons of Sharing Craft Night and we need your help to make it a memorable occasion! Please consider devoting no more than an hour of your time to help set up, facilitate craft stations, or clean up.

Sign up at this link and let us know if you can help! Thank you for your support!

Magnet Tour Volunteers Needed

If you have time to volunteer to help prospective parents tour Harvard, we could really use your help. Our remaining Magnet Tours take place Thurs mornings once a month. All you need to do is be there, come along on the tour and ask questions of parents during the short tour --you won't be put on the spot or presenting anything yourself. Come share your love of Harvard! The schedule of needed times can be found at this link below. We appreciate your help!

Voting FOR Prop 1: Recapture

Dear Harvard Families,

After careful consideration, research, listening and learning, I believe it is better for HISD to make the recapture payments to the state and avoid "detachment" of properties. HISD is wanting to risk losing these properties with an "against" vote in order to fight this to the bitter end in Austin. However, this is costly, would take years, and the result may still be the same for us. AND those properties, once detached, are lost to us as revenue streams forever. Without them, other revenue streams (read: taxes) would go up to help HISD pay back the bonds.

Everyone must make their own decision at the voting booth, but please know that I deeply trust the careful and honest insight of our trustee, Anna Eastman, who herself was initially caught up in the emotions of it all, but took the time to look at the hard facts along with the current players in Austin to come to the conclusion that we must for FOR.

I am happy to do my best to further explain if you would like to contact me, but here are a few other resources for you that may explain this better.

No matter what you decide, set an example for your kiddos and get out and vote!

Scott Hochberg, former state senator for Houston and 20-year veteran of the House Committee on Public Education
